Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue, as its name says, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres.

Using deep muscle compression and friction along the grain of the muscle, the purpose of Deep Tissue Massage is to free the fibres of the muscles and release both toxins and deeply held tension points.

Being both corrective and therapeutic, it helps to loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating more effectively.

It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain. Because it works very deeply, emotional issues can also be addressed.

Deep Tissue Massage usually focuses on specific areas and may cause some soreness during or after the session. Whilst pain may be experienced you should feel better within a day or two after treatment. Water assists to remove toxins from the body so it is important to drink plenty of water after a Deep Tissue Massage to help with this process.

When muscles become knotted and tense or damaged, remedial massage provides a holistic treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with remedial massage include muscle tightness and pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, whiplash, neck and back pain, scoliosis, headaches and sports injuries.

The massage therapist endeavours to identify the original biomechanical dysfunction, thus remeding the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms. Deep or light pressure is applied to the musculoskeletal system for the purpose of muscle relaxation, myofascial release, and increased local blood flow and lymph flow.

Remedial massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints. Passive joint mobilisation and stretching techniques are also used.

Massage therapy supports and speeds up the body's own repair mechanisms. This ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated.

Benefits of Remedial Massage

  • stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed
  • calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort
  • toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility.

Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Massage movements include the use of trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:

  • pre-event sports massage -- a short, stimulating massage 15 - 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.
  • post-event sports massage -- given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body's tissues.
  • restorative sports massage -- given during training to allow the athelete to train harder and with less injury.
  • rehabilitative sports massage -- aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.
